The Atals Universel was published in Paris by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy. The atlas was unique in that the de Vaugondys appended a list of 650 subscribers with their addresses and occupations to the front matter of their atlas. They intended their atlas for a wide and general clientel; it was advertised in Journal de Savans over a five year period. The atlas contained 12 maps in the ancient geography section, 91 maps in the modern geography section. Some editions contained 5 extra maps of roads in Italy, Spain, Germany, England, and France. They were available in two folio sizes: large paper (560mm x 780mm) or small paper (508mm x 670mm).
