Map of Germany by Abraham Ortelius from the 1587 French edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theater of the World) published in Antwerp with a 250 print run. The map includes elaborate strapwork cartouches at the top left, bottom left, and bottom right corners, which enclose the title, a crest with the German Imperial Eagle, and the map's scale respectively. A distinctive feature of this copy of "Germania" is the vertical and diagonal lines across the surface of the map to form a grid. At the top are numbers written in graphite (1-14) and ink (28-47) that correspond to the grid lines. The French text on the verso begins the chapter, "Alemaigne" (29r). The last line indented left transcribed: "le moindre,& qui apporte le mions de dommage fon prochain."
