Erythraei sive Rubri Maris periplus, olim ab Arriano descriptus, nunc vero ab Abrah. Ortelio ex eodem delineatus
A hand-colored map of the region surrounding the Indian Ocean, or Erythraean Sea, as it was called in antiquity. This map was published by Jan Jansson after a similar map by Abraham Ortelius in Parergon. The insets depict Annonis Periplus (northwestern Africa) and Hyper-Borei (the northern polar regions) as it was thought at the time. The scrollwork cartouche in the bottom center details that the names of the places are labeled after Ptolemy, who derived his information from the writings of the conquests of Alexander the Great. This map appears in various editions of Jansson's Atlas Novus.
