Plate 3 of 'Historia de la marina real espa̱ola episodios maritimos' lithographed by J. J. Martinez and others. The print depicts a small group of Columbus' crew landing in the New World after sailing for two months and 10 days and claiming it for the Spanish crown on October 16, 1492. In the foreground are detailed depictions of flora from which natives emerge. While some men stand guarded in the right, a native man on the left beckons his people to witness the Spaniards. A group of barely-clothed women marvel over various objects shown to them by Spanish man kneeling beside a box. The admiral, Columbus, stands in the center of the print surrounded by his entourage and plants the royal flag as a symbol of claiming the land.
