AF-LX-1680.T.jpg

A brightly hand-colored print (T. III) that is after the fresco of the Death of Adonis and Poseidon at the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence. This print is one of the three companion prints of prints after the work of Giordano (T. II, III, IV).

According to Greek mythology, Adonis was killed by a wild boar sent by Artemis, who was jealous of Adonis' hunting skills or as retaliation against Aphrodite after instigating the death of Hippolytus, a favorite of the the hunting goddess. Artemis, signaled by her crescent crown, is in the backgrond behind the dead Adonis. The boar that killed Adonis is seen running off in the background as well. On the left side of the image, Poseidon is surrounded by sea nymphs and a whale.
