AF-MD-5024.T.jpg

Hand-colored, copper-engraved map of the Arabian Peninsula. This map is one of the earliest map to illustrate the internal geographic features of the area. Mountains, oases, and points of pearl deposits are indicated pictorially in the Arabian Gulf. Dotted lines indicate international borders. The Red Sea is identified by three Latin names: Mare Rubrum, Mare Mecca, and Sinus Arabicus (Arabian Gulf). The Persian Gulf is indentified: Mare Elcatif (al-Qatif Sea) and Sinus Persicus.

Various animals such as lions, elephants, and camels dot the land. A sea monster and two ships decorate the Arabian Sea. On the bottom left corner is an elaborate title cartouche and two male figures wearing turbans.
