A 19th-century reproduction print by Edward Stanford which was originally from Olfert Dapper's book, Naukeurige beschrijvinge der Afrikaensche (Amsterdam: 1668) and engraved by Jacob van Meurs.
The map of Africa by van Meurs was the first to incorporate the ancient idea that the Nile sprung from the two lakes of Zaire and Zafflan. It is also one of the earliest maps to clearly delineate the separate countries in Africa, and it has two decorative cartouches (the first depicts two natives along with angels, and the other depicts Neptune and his court). It is characteristic of other maps of the period with its use of detail: there are topographical features, many place names, and illustrations of wild animals.
