Engraving depicting a naval battle between two small ships: at left, a single-masted ship flying a Dutch flag, with a rowboat beside it, and right, a two-masted ship flying the Holy Roman Imperial flag. A cloud of cannon smoke fills the space between the ship. In the lower margin, from the same plate, is the text labeling the ships: "A. De Holl. Schooner. B. De Keizerl. Brik." Below the plate impression, printed using a printing press, is the following text: "AFBEELDING van het beruchte voorval Met 's Lands Schoone[r] de Dolphyn, en de Keizerlyke Brik de Louis, in het Gezicht van Lillo" (Image of the infamous event with the Dutch schooner Dolphyn, and the Imperial brig of Louis, as seen from Lillo.)
Watermark is partially cut off, but has a shieldlike motif and the letters "JH & Z".
Lillo is a fort near Antwerp, at that time fallen into disuse. In October 1784, the Holy Roman Emperor, allied with Spain, sent ships from the still-Spanish city of Antwerp into Dutch waters as a threat of war. On 9 October, the Dutch ship Dolfijn sailed forth to intercept the ships, firing a single shot--which hit a kettle--before the Louis surrendered. Subsequently, war broke out.
