Uncolored engraving of a cutter at sea, sails fully unfurled, with a four-masted ship behind it at right and several boats on the water. The four-masted ship flies a flag with a cross in the canton, probably intended to be a British naval jack. In the left-hand background are two towers rising out of a landmass. These are the "Two Sisters", the twin towers of the ruin of St. Mary's Church in Reculvers, near Margate, England. Due to coastal erosion, the church, founded in the 7th century and heavily expanded in the medieval period, was almost entirely demolished in 1809. The towers, dating from the late twelfth century, were left standing due to their importance as a landmark to shipping--an importance that may have merited their inclusion in this seascape.
