Recumbent effigies, carved figures lying on top of tomb chests, commemorated knights and nobles in medieval churches. Knights were usually shown in armor, hands joined in prayer, with a sword, shield bearing their coat of arms, and often a lion or dog at their feet.
These monuments presented the dead as they wished to be remembered for eternity and asked visitors to pray for their souls.
