Bust of Commodus, Sardis

Sardis Archaeological Site

Commodus (r. 180-192 CE), son of Marcus Aurelius, was the last emperor of the Antonine dynasty. His reign, marked by extravagance and his appearances as a gladiator, ended with his assassination in 192.

Sardis, former capital of the Lydian kingdom of Croesus, was a prosperous city of Roman Asia, and imperial portraits were displayed in its public buildings, including the great bath-gymnasium complex.
