Geometric Period Horse Figurine

Archaeological Museum of Olympia

Small bronze horses were among the most common offerings at Olympia in the Geometric period, when the sanctuary of Zeus was becoming a major religious center. Owning horses was a mark of aristocratic wealth, and these figurines may have been dedicated by horse owners or in connection with chariot racing.

Their stylized forms, with long legs, slender bodies and flattened manes, are typical of Geometric art, and thousands of bronze and terracotta figurines have been excavated in the sanctuary.
