Both objects come from the Royal Cemetery at Ur, excavated by Leonard Woolley in the 1920s and 1930s. The Standard of Ur is a hollow wooden box inlaid with shell, red limestone and lapis lazuli, with two main sides known as "War" and "Peace": one shows chariots and soldiers with captives brought before a ruler, the other a banquet with animals and goods carried in procession.
The Ram in a Thicket, made of gold leaf, copper, shell, lapis lazuli and red limestone, shows a goat rearing up against a flowering plant. It is one of a pair found in the "Great Death Pit"; its twin is in the Penn Museum in Philadelphia.
