Black-Figure Hydria with the Chariot of Hector

British Museum

A hydria is a water jar with three handles: two horizontal ones for lifting and a vertical one for pouring. In the black-figure technique, figures were painted in a slip that turned black in the kiln, with details incised through to the red clay beneath.

Scenes from the Trojan War were among the favorite subjects of Athenian painters. Hector, the greatest Trojan hero, appears here with his chariot, an image that recalls his battles before Troy and his death at the hands of Achilles, who dragged his body behind his chariot.
