This is one of the most remarkable works published by the great philologist (literary scholar) Markos Mousouros. This was the first time that Renaissance scholars encountered the original texts of Plato, which until then they were only able to read in the Latin translation of the humanist Marcilio Ficino. This edition was printed by the printing house of Aldus Manutius, and was made possible with the
support and interest of Lorenzo de Medici, also known as Lorenzo the Magnificent, and his son Pope Leo I, an admirer of Greek literature. The text is prefaced by an Ode to Plato by M. Mousouros, dedicated to Leo I, which also pleads with Plato to mediate so that the Pope might organize a crusade to liberate the Greeks. The copy on display here belonged to deacon Philotheos.
