This elaborately decorated late antique villa is one of the most important representations of the Roman Empire in the West.
The Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, Sicily, is the supreme example of a late-imperial Roman luxury villa and symbolizes the use of the territory by the Romans as the center of the large property on which the rural economy was based of the Western Empire.
The Villa del Casale is one of the most luxurious of its kind and is famous for the richness and quality of its mosaics (4th century AD), which are recognized as the most beautiful in situ Roman mosaics. This mosaic treasure testifies to the lifestyle habits of the Roman ruling class and shows the mutual influences between cultures and exchanges in the ancient Mediterranean - between the Roman world and the North African area.
The villa is spread over 48 rooms (about 3500 square meters of surface) covered with mosaics in perfect condition, perhaps by African masters, which allow you to retrace the history of the greatest of the Empires, with scenes of daily life, the depictions of heroes and gods, hunting and game scenes.
The Villa del Casale therefore represents a fundamental testimony for the understanding of Roman life and civilization to which it offers us, thanks to the perfect conservation of the environments and mosaic representations, an inimitable fresco.
The Villa continued to be inhabited even in the Byzantine and early Middle Ages (V-VII century) and in the Arab-Norman period (X-XII century) it was still frequented as an emporium and agricultural center. Between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, after the devastation of the previous centuries, a new agricultural center called the Casale was established, from which the current name of the archaeological area comes. Following subsequent damage and floods, and the consequent landslides that covered many areas of the complex, the ancient Roman settlement was definitively abandoned but it is thanks to this same roof that, over time, the exceptional mosaic of the Villa has been preserved. to reach our days.

La Villa continuato ad essere abitata anche In epoca bizantina e altomedievale (V-VII secolo) e nel periodo arabo-normanno (X-XII secolo) era ancora frequentata come emporio e centro agricolo. Tra il XIV e il XV secolo, dopo le devastazioni dei secoli precedenti, si costituì un nuovo centro agricolo denominato il Casale, da cui proviene l'odierna denominazione dell'area archeologica. A seguito di successivi danneggiamenti e alluvioni, e dei conseguente smottamenti che coprirono molte zone del complesso, l'antico insediamento romano fu abbandonato definitivamente ma è proprio grazie a questa stessa copertura che, nel tempo, l'eccezionale apparato musivo della Villa si è conservato per giungere fino ai nostri giorni.
