A crater is a big cup for mixing wine with water, a Greek and Roman habit. It is a Greek ‘bell crater’, made in Red-figure Attic pottery. On one side, the god Apollo and his entourage lead a pig to an altar to be sacrificed. One of them plays a diaulos (double-reeded flute, usual in religious ceremonies). On the other side there are two women and a man talking. The women have their hair gathered in a typical Greek bow.
