The Treasury of the Athenians was a small Doric building on the Sacred Way at Delphi, built to house Athenian offerings to Apollo. According to Pausanias it was paid for from the spoils of the Battle of Marathon (490 BCE), though some scholars date it slightly earlier.
Its metopes, carved in high relief, paired the labors of Herakles with the deeds of the Athenian hero Theseus, presenting Athens' own hero as an equal of the greatest Greek hero. The originals are in the Delphi Museum; the treasury on site was rebuilt in 1903-1906 with casts.
