Fragments of Bronze Statues

Archaeological Museum of Delphi

The sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi was crowded with bronze statues dedicated by cities, rulers and victorious athletes. Nearly all were later melted down for their metal or carried off, the Roman emperor Nero is said to have taken hundreds, and today only fragments survive, along with rare masterpieces such as the Charioteer.

These fragments of limbs, drapery and other parts give a sense of the lost forest of bronze statues that once lined the Sacred Way.
