The central composition is based on the Deesis scene. The two priests holding the books with their Liturgies, and dressed in lavish priestly vestments, revere Christ in the center. The bright white lighting comes in stark contrast with the dark-complexioned faces. The crown of the border depicts the Sinai landscape, including holy pilgrimage sites and Saint Catherine. The border is carved in relief, and is adorned with a winding vine interspersed with crosses; the theme symbolizes gratitude, thus enhancing the magnificence of the whole composition. The icon is purportedly the work of painter-priest Victor, who lived in Heraklion (Crete) during the second half of the seventeenth century, gained repute as an artist, and was closely associated with Sinai.
